Pink Shoes

I love having a daughter.

But I hate shopping for little girl's shoes.

It's nearly impossible to find girls shoe's without it being bright pink with glitter, sparkles, sequins, animal prints, appliqué flowers, bows or ribbons all over them. Why do little girls have to be so gaudy? Can't they just be cute and classy? 

I'm sure that as my daughter grows up she'll probably be asking for the shoes with the glitter and sequins. But while I she's still my little girl, can I please have shoes for a 2 year old that just aren't so loud. Girls shouldn't be defined by bows or sparkles. They should be able to be girls without all that crap. We're not christmas trees ready to be adorned with ornaments. We're girls who have opinions and ideas, not just a bunch of pretty flowers to look at. Sure it's ok to want those things, but when those are the only options on the shelves, what message are we sending our daughters?

So I wonder, If I can teach her about style now, will she want all those things later? If we can shape the way she views being a girl and what it means to dress "girly" at 2, will she make better choices when she's 12? Let's start teaching little girls style instead of flash. Because we don't need all that to be beautiful. Being a girl means being strong, smart and kind on the inside and knowing that makes you beautiful on the outside. 

It took me forever to find this pair today. True it's pink but i would have gladly bought these in white, beige or even blue. But it was one of 2 pairs I found in the entire store without some or (more often) all of the above. A bittersweet success.
